Listen to advice when you get it

You might not act upon it - you should, however, listen to it. I've met hundreds, maybe thousands of recruiters by now and I'm still frustrated by guys who have been in the industry for a few years who feel that 'newbie's' can't teach them anything. When I run open courses (as I do at least once somewhere every week), it's more often than not the delegates who are new to the industry who, because of their lack of recruitment experience, seem to chip in with "What if.." thoughts that prompt discussion rather than the seasoned recruiters.

Now, having made that comment, it is perhaps saying more about seasoned recruiters than it is about newbie's. I've said this before I'm sure, but please - share your advice, thoughts and information - the more you give, the more you get back and that isn't just a Santa 'Clause.' Ever listened to your mum or dad when you were really young and thought "Yeh - right!" and then find yourself saying the same things now? Well guess what - they were right!

Bringing that back to your colleagues', clients' or candidates' advice - it will perhaps only take you one phone call, one question or one test to find out whether it works! I wouldn't have ever found the joy of a band like 'The Hold Steady' if I ignored a 'geek' in my local, who started talking to me about music. I'm just back from the best gig I've been to this year. Guess what? - I met a random bloke at the gig who said "If you like them you ought to try out.."
