Barter
Bartering is the exchange of products or service without money involved. An informal barter would be that, as your neighbour mowed your lawn because he/she had their mower out anyway, you might in return wash their car because you had your power hose out to do yours.

Have you ever considered bartering in the business arena? It is something that we at Recruitment Matters International discuss quite regularly with various suppliers and contacts to keep our overheads down. We have done that for many years and not just because of last year’s recession.  Let me give you some examples of what we have bartered. I have trained a hotel’s staff in customer service in exchange for hotel accommodation at later dates. We’ve trained another hotel’s staff in telephone skills in return for the use of conference rooms for our open courses. We have helped recruit an Area Sales Rep for a printing firm in exchange for flyers and brochures. We have had free printing done in exchange for printing an advert for that printer on certain literature. We have even had the use of a hospitality suite to entertain our clients at a major sporting venue (Silverstone) in exchange for some consultancy work.

Bartering can save you lots of money – it is as simple at that. Remember one thing if you do it though, you should invoice out at the full price and they should invoice you at theirs. That way it is all clean and above board.

Here is a project for you. Why not stop reading this now and list all the types of companies that you recruit for that could offer you their products and services in return for yours. For example, a year’s use of a Mercedes for placing a car salesperson? It’s starting to seem exciting now I bet? Happy bartering!

P.S. Even think about involving two or three suppliers/clients.  If you could get us a hospitality suite at a sporting /music event in return for training your company and you got that by placing a candidate we would all be happy!
